The Washington Monument was built to honor George Washington, the first president of the United States. The Washington Monument was built in Washington, D.C. It was begun in 1848. It was completed in 1884. The shape of the monument is called an obelisk. That means it is a four-sided pillar that forms a pyramid at the top. It is made of marble. The Washington Monument is 555 feet high. That makes it the tallest building in Washington, D.C. There is a stairway with 898 steps to the top, but visitors take an elevator to get to the top.
